“American Girl in Italy” este una din clasicile lucrari ale lui Ruth Orkin. In 1951 ea a calatorit in Israel avand un angajament din partea Filarmonicii Israeliene. Dupa ce a trait cateva luni in acolo, ea si-a continuat calatoriile in Italia. In Florenta a intalnit un student la arte ce ii va deveni subiect pentru o fotografie ilustrativa intitulata “Don’t Be Afraid to Travel Alone”.

Orkin a fotografiat aceasta nemuritoare imagine in Piazza del Republica din Florenta. Fotografia a fost publicata intai in paginile revistei Cosmopolitan (9/52) iar de atunci a aparut in nenumarate alte publicatii si este cunoscuta in intreaga lume.

  1. This is the first time I have seen the photo. Wow it made me feel nervous once I got past that feeling I was able to see how lovely it is. I did show my 12 yr old the photo and asked them what they thought of it. They said they didn’t like it all the men look as if they are going to rob her. ( I didn’t get that impression at all) I asked if the girl looked scared and the 12 yr said no The girl was not scared. So there is a timeless confidence in the image of the woman in the photo. The men in the photo still have a negative undertone though their personal intent at the time was not. It’s a just a moment in time caught on film. We will be looking and talking about for what ever years there are to come.
